Benefits to Students Starting behaviors in college means individuals are more likely to continue through adulthood May promote other sustainable ideas Tools are provided, basically free Reduces wear and tear on clothes

Benefit to University Dryers can use Watts of energy per load (energy.gov) It costs about $0.12 per killowatt-hour to dry clothes in a dryer (bestenergymonitor.com) If HALF of residents do one hour of drying per week (dry time = 1800 hours)  Costs University $864 per month Over 9 months (September to May)  Costs University $7,776

Benefit to University Reduce drying time by 10% (total dry time=1620 hours) Yearly cost is $6,998.40

Cost Savings That’s a savings of $ over one year Remember, that’s just 10% reduction

Check-Out at Control Desk Each campus or building has a main control desk  This is where residents check out vacuums and check in guests after hours Racks would be available to 2% of residents on each Campus  East Campus has 1,335 residents  27 Racks  West Campus has 945 residents  19 Racks  South Campus has 1520 residents  30 racks Total of 76 Drying Racks

Resident Assistants store the Racks Estimate that there are 70 Resident Assistants on campus  Each Resident Assistant would store 2 drying racks in their rooms Total of 140 Drying Racks If racks cannot be stored in Resident Assistant rooms, they could be stored in the laundry rooms

Racks Available in Rooms Because of cluster style rooms, estimate is 25% of resident population would need racks Total 950 Drying Racks Because the racks are more readily available, the residents are more likely to use them

Student Employment Undergraduate Intern to keep track of the drying racks and run the drying rack program Duties:  Beginning of year/semester inventory of all drying racks on campus  End of year/semester inventory of all drying racks on campus  Ordering replacement drying racks as needed  Compiling and creating educational materials to be used around campus  Working with the Office of Sustainability and Campus Housing to ensure the continued effectiveness and successfulness of the program, and make recommendations for changes as needed

RACKS STUDENT INTERN Budget

Cost $79 24 feet of drying space Cost for each Option:  OPTION 1 (76 racks): $6,004 (plus shipping of $275.58)  OPTION 2 (140 racks): $11,060 (plus shipping of $500.30)  OPTION 3 (950 racks): $75,050 (plus shipping of $3,373.10)

Lehman’s Drying Rack Cost $ feet of drying space Cost for each Option:  OPTION 1 (76 racks): $1, (with discount of $12.16)  OPTION 2 (140 racks): $2, (with a discount of $22.40)  OPTION 3 (950 racks): $16, (with a discount of $174.40)

Household Essentials Cost $ feet of drying space Cost for each Option:  OPTION 1 (76 racks): $1,  OPTION 2 (140 racks): $ 2,  OPTION 3 (950 racks): $18,971.50

Student Intern Would work about 10 hours per week The cost would be about $2,000 per semester

Carried out by student intern. Material should be widely available to all residents Formats:  Posters  Campus Housing website  Facebook  Pamphlets  s  Table tents in dining halls and other locations

Education Plan Information should include:  Information about the Green Fee  Cost savings  Energy savings  Drying rack options  Instructional materials on purchasing your own drying rack
