Women in Mathematics Committee Gwyneth Stallard Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Open University Chair of the London Mathematical Society’s Women in Mathematics Committee

Proportions of women Over 40% of undergraduates in Mathematical Sciences are female. Only 4% of professors in Mathematical Sciences are female. Similar picture in other STEM areas in the UK.

Women in Maths Committee Formed in members – 9 women + 1 man – all academics Chair has right to attend Council and reports to Council annually

Council statement - issues broken career patterns and part time working overlooked for speakers or prizes often called on to sit on committees often called on to take part in people- based activities rather than research- based activities tend to understate their skills

Council statement - actions review gender balance on committees review regulations governing membership, prizes, awards and grants encourage nomination of women for prizes and awards expect LMS funded meetings to include both male and female speakers
