SHOULD WOMEN BE PAID LESS THAN MEN? Hope they’re not still doing this in 2014 !!! Discrimination

With your partner.. Write a definition of: PREJUDICE... DISCRIMINATION... STEREOTYPE...

STEREOTYPES fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based solely on physical appearance. PREJUDICE a. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts. b. A preconceived preference or idea. DISCRIMINATION unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice

Why can stereotypes lead on to worse things....? BECAUSE THEY CAN BE... -The foundation for prejudice and discrimination. -Obstacles in getting to know others for whom they are, versus who we think they might be. -Stereotypes are unfortunately learned at a young age, and they remain, as most mental models do - untested, unchallenged, confused with reality. Common sources of steretoypes include parents, other family members, educators, peers, media, etc.

Write an example of prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination and answer these questions... Where do you think these prejudices come from in society? What results may occur from holding these attitudes? What do YOU think about these examples?

What other forms of inequality can you think of? Discuss in pairs and see how many you can find...then tell me where this inequality stems from?

What about..... What are the roots behind these inequalities?

Are all old people useless? AGEISM.....

Should women fight?

What is beauty?

What does ‘able’ mean?

CHALLENGE Can you name any people who have challenged a stereotype or prejudice and what effect it has had on their own or others’ lives. Why were they motivated to do this?
