Causes of WWI

M.A.I.N. The main reasons of “The Great War” had been brewing for several years. Use the acronym M.A.I.N. to remember the 4 major causes.

Militarism Glorification of military strength. European countries knew if a war broke out they would need to have a strong army to survive. An arms race began, and each country tried to make sure it had the largest army and the best weapons.

Alliances Most European countries felt they had to align with other countries to stay strong. They agreed to defend each other in the event one of them gets attacked. This meant one move and the whole continent would be at war.

Important Alliances Triple Entente- Russia, France, Britain The Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungry, and Italy. Many other alliances were secret

Imperialism When a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule. Germany was jealous that France and Britain were expanding their territory. This caused hard feelings between all countries, Bosnia and Serbia the most.

Nationalism There was a growing feeling that each country had to prove it was better than its neighbors. The people were willing to go to war to show they were proud of their country. No one in Bosnia or Serbia wanted to be controlled by an outside country and several groups were plotting revenge…...

With all of the tension that had built up over the years, the world could tell that one small event could ignite a huge war. That event took place on June 28 th 1914……. “Powder Keg”

Setting the Stage. Arch Duke of Austria-Hungary (Franz Ferdinand) was supposed to be the next king There was a lot of trouble in the Balkan region of the world over power and control of territory Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian rebel wanted to end Austro- Hungarian control over Serbia He shot and killed the Arch Duke and his wife…

Aftermath……. June 28 th 1914-Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia July Russia mobilizes troops August Germany declares war on Russia August Germany declares war on Britain August 3-4, 1914-Germany invades Belgium August 4, 1914-Great Britain declares war on Germany
