How do artists express themselves? Distortion and Exaggeration Purposefully distorting proportions, features of the face, color, shapes, textures, actions, etc in order to express an idea or emotion. How is distortion or exaggeration used in these portraits? What are characteristics of the artist’s style? What emotions or ideas about the artist are being expressed?

History of Expression Artists are always trying to express themselves right? Let’s start with Van Gogh- Considered POST-Impressionist because his art was expressing emotion, not just the effects of light on a scene. His color choices were more subjective. Beginnings of expressionism. Picasso translated his portraits into a number of styles, Cubism being the most recognizable. Breaking the portraits down into flat shapes, expressive marks etc. He is able to convey emotion by not having to be realistic. Matisse is using highly subjective color in his portraits, known as Fauvism. German Expressionists like Rotluff, Dix, Kirschner, all experiment with color, distortion within the figure and style of painting. Neo-expressionists continue where the German Expressionists left off, bringing in even more expressive style, alluding to graffiti, and working on a variety of surfaces, with unconventional materials.
