Employment Skills for Computing

Module Brief  This module prepares students to build their competency for employability through working on ‘People’ skills & Job Placement Components.  team working,  delivering presentations,  client relationships and attending meetings  and ‘environmental’ issues  health and safety, business ethics

Module Aim  Prepare students for employability.  Enable students to conduct critical self-analysis and reflection. “Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.” ― William Faulkner  Develop appropriate skills needed by graduates to compete in the labor market ( research, communication, presentation, initiation, teamwork).

Why IT?  The products and end results of IT are a part of our daily lives.  Careers in the IT field are expected to grow significantly. - For instance, jobs in computer software engineering are expected to grow by 32% by 2018 (Bureau of Labor Statistics)  According to the Economic Survey , IT sector is one of India’s largest employers, employing nearly 35 lakh people.  If we get into this sector, we inherit the tag of ‘Born Global’.

Contribution to Class (10%) Students will gain marks each time they demonstrate one of the following actions:  Makes outstanding, original, and formative contributions to class discussion  Provides clear, concise, correct explanations to the questions asked by the lecturer/tutor  Provides clear, concise, correct explanations to the other student questions.  Ask incisive questions relevant to the course which is useful to other students as well.

Contribution to Class (10%) Weekly!  Takes part in the presentation of the group work during the tutorial/lab session.  Makes highly attentive and constructive comments on other people’s statements and presentations.  Explains if they find another person’s ideas interesting or useful, and describes why.

Contribution to Class (10%) Weekly! Student will have their marks deducted each time they demonstrate one of the following actions:  Arrives late to class (More than 10 minutes)  Conduct side conversations  Dozes or daydreams conspicuously  Uses mobile phone during the class  Does other module assignments during the class

Group Work (50%)  Working in a group of 5, you are required to come up with a business plan for the new venture based on communication technology. For instance, computer solutions, IT helpdesk etc.  The group first task is to identify a name of your company, design a logo, specify a primary product or service and write a brief rationale (100 words) as to why you think this company will succeed –Week 3 Tutorial  Note: Any group member who are not present during the presentation/s will not receive marks for that particular presentation/s. The deadline for forming a company team is at the LAB session of Week 2.

Interim Presentation (10%) – Week 7 The objectives of the interim presentation is to develop team working ability and involvement in the assigned tasks for achievement of common goals. The interim group presentation will be assessed on the following basis:  Presentation skills  Work Division  Time management and dressing etiquette  Research for the company and alternatives

Group report (25%) – Week 10  The Current Position  The Business  Customer Base and Marketing Strategy  The Competition  Organization Chart  Job Description for each role within the team  Person specification for each role  Group minutes log book

Final Presentation (15%) –Week 12 Delivery of the information in the report and presentation will differ in terms of approach and depth of coverage.  Presentation skills  Time management and dressing etiquette  Fluent spoken English  Quality of content  Delivery of content  Individual familiarity with all parts of the Group Report  Handling of questions
