Fixture 5 Warm up First Half: Newspaper matching activity Second half: Celebrity Head Post Match Activities

Objectives To practise reading newspapers and find out why you read them To explore the language and style of reports To read for real

Warm-up Game Football Rumours Split into small teams. Each team stands and makes a line. The person at the beginning of the line has to whisper a sentence about football into the ear of the person next to them. (This could be a sentence about their favourite player.) This person then turns and whispers what they heard into the ear of the person next to them. The whisper is passed on until it reaches the person at the end of the line. Then that person has to say out loud what they heard. Is it different from the original sentence?

Which Headline Matches this Article? Why? Gareth Bale's Real Madrid struggles continued last night as he was once again booed following the club’s exit from the Champions League. Madrid's exit from the competition sparked a frenzied media reaction in Spain, with one newspaper branding it 'the fiasco of the century'. Bale himself featured on a number of back pages in the UK and Spain as the dejected Welshman once again became a focal point for Real's troubles. In pairs discuss: 1. What strategies did you use to match the article to the headline? 2. What language techniques make these headlines effective? Feedback….

The First Half You will look at a selection of articles Match the headline to the article Skimming for the gist and scanning for keywords is key to your success Can you spot the Who, What, When, Where (the 4Ws) in each? You will share the answers as a group with students reading the headlines as dramatically as possible to score extra points! You will be asked 10 questions about the articles so make sure you read the first few lines very closely indeed!

The Second Half Celebrity Head Images of footballers will be displayed behind you You have to guess who it is You can ask up to 10 questions But the audience can only answer “yes” or “no”
