Transforming the Council of Fellows Board of Directors Meeting Board Brief April 18, 2005 Thomas Reid, CPCM, Director Joseph J. McGrenra, CFCM, Fellow, Director

BACKGROUND The Council of Fellows consists of all persons who have been recognized by the organization through the receipt of its third highest honor – the Fellow designation. Traditionally, the Council of Fellows has failed to utilize it’s strength of being the “Brain Trust” of NCMA. There are approximately 1,000 Fellows, but the average Council of Fellows Meeting has drawn between approximately 30 to 50 members.

INTERNAL CONFLICT While the achievement of Fellow status is based on individual accomplishment, the Council has not had a well-defined or disciplined structure or mission for its collective membership. Most Fellows continue service to their chapter, but collectively there has been little contribution to the organization from the Council.

SOLUTION Create a College of Fellows within the Council of Fellows OR TRANSFORM the existing Council of Fellows into College of Fellows.

DETAILS Need a Dean/Chair-If approved by the Board has agreed to consider this position A number of Fellows will be identified and asked to join the College-and they must make a commitment to service Will require little support from National (perhaps an intranet site)

COLLEGE OF FELLOWS The College of Fellows would not be part of the governance structure of NCMA. It would exist solely as a service group that would provide specific input upon the request of the HQ staff or Board The College of Fellows would have NO AUTHORITY save the power of persuasion The activities of the College are in NO WAY EXCLUSIVE.

GOALS Attempt to harness and focus the “Brain Trust” of NCMA Will require little support from National NOT to duplicate anything that is going on in another part of NCMA, but to determine where the service of the College of Fellows might enhance the functioning of that activity

GOALS cont’d Develop presentations and provide them and speakers (where possible) for  chapter events and functions  Contract Management magazine  Journal Serve as Liaisons to Educational institutions Maintain Speakers Roster Other Duties as Assigned by the Board or the National Office

POINT TO CONSIDER Among the Fellows are some very frustrated members who want to do more and simply need the structure, encouragement and guidance of their peers in a collegial environment-that is what the College of Fellows will provide HQ staff support will be limited to the provision of a Fellows listing with as much detail as may exist in the HQ database relative to the teaching/speaking/writing activities of each Fellow, and the ultimate generation of invitation letters
