Chapter 2 cont.

IV- French Settlements A) While the Spanish sent soldiers to take the new world, France sent FISHERMEN and TRAPPERS.

1) The French Colonists explored and settled along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. 2) They would eventually travel all the way down the Mississippi River and found New Orleans.

B) The French traded European goods (metal tools, muskets) for valuable animal skins. C) This established the FUR TRADE, the foundation of French settlements in Canada.

1) Trade in Beaver skins became a VERY profitable business for French trappers.

D) The French government had little interest to create large cities in the New World. 1) They were content to only set up trading posts that brought in some revenue.

Spain already has a strangle hold on South and Central America. Spanish Colonies are shipping vast sums of plunder home to Spain.

England is becoming very jealous of Spain’s success. England decides to authorize a group of privateers (pirates) to attack Spanish ships bringing home New World Treasure

These pirate’s become known as the SEA DOGS. They stole and sunk many of the Spanish trade ships. The most famous Sea Dog was Sir FRANCIS DRAKE.

Drake stole an entire years worth of mined silver from the Spanish in Peru (the old Inca Empire) Queen Elizabeth knighted Drake on the deck of his ship upon his return.

Needless to say, Spain gets pretty angry about this. Spain prepares to go to war against England.

Spain uses its New World money to build one of the largest war fleets ever made

THE SPANISH ARMADA

The Armada sailed up to England looking to completely destroy them. But, the English Navy, with the help of a nasty storm, destroy the Armada. Spain is severely weakened.
