Comparing Numbers Line up the decimals of the numbers being compared. Line up the decimals of the numbers being compared. Then, compare the place values for each digit starting from the left. Then, compare the place values for each digit starting from the left. Find the difference. The number with the largest digit is the larger number. Find the difference. Ordering Negative Numbers Look at the number line above. Look at the number line above. Recall that the further left an object is on the number line, the smaller the number. Recall that the further left an object is on the number line, the smaller the number. So, -50 is smaller than -20. So, -50 is smaller than -20.
