How to Write a Letter to the Editor

What is a letter to the editor? Letters to the editor usually address a recent event or issue covered by a newspaper. They provide people in the community with an opportunity to make their voice heard on current issues in the news.

Tips for Writing the letter The first paragraph should state the reason you are writing. The direct route works best:- "I am writing about" or "Thanks for publishing...” Be short and to the point. Peat, repeat, peat and repeat again: Repeat use of a phrase or word.

Vary sentence lengths and don't be afraid to use paragraphs. Shorter paragraphs make your letter more readable. Long paragraphs make then boring. The last paragraph is the most important Make it short and to the point. Emphasize important values

Assignment You may now compose your letter to the editor of the London Times. Remember you are composing this letter from the point of view of your character. In this letter you state your opinion on the play A Doll's House. Your letter should accurately reflect Victorian attitudes by making specific social and cultural references as well as refer to specific parts of the play. You will submit the letter and your character profile handout together.
