Outreach Financing Germany Michael Kobel Pisa

Possible Sources of Financing BMBF ministry for research and education Foundations –Bosch –Heräus –Stifterverband (foundation for science) –DAAD (German academic exchange service) Industry

BMBF ministry Research division –No extra outreach budget –Possible to get some 1000 Euro as an appendix to a research project –Example: Production of German ATLAS film Education division –BIG problem: education is matter of the 16 states –VERY hard to find a suitable program

Foundations Stifterverband: PUSH program (Public Understanding of Science and Humanities) fixed application dates, some 10,000 Euro per project 2003: Chemistry, usually less constrained supporting „Physics on Stage“ Germany Bosch: Nat-Working cooperation university-school big sums of money (~100,000 Euro) available esp. for initializing permanent projects (lab courses, e.g. Bonn) Heräus, close to DPG (German Phys. Society) small sums (few 1000 Euro) for school projects, in-service teachers training, seminars DAAD: bilateral personnal exchange travel money, e.g. INTERACT UK-Germany

Industry Metal Industry: „Think Ing.“ support improved science teaching at school biggest sponsor for „Physics on Stage“ Germany (several 10,000 Euro, partially in-kind: e.g. printing brochures) Volkswagen infrastructure and huge PR campaign for TESLA exhibition Siemens: MINT-Excellence Centers MINT = Math, Informatics, science, Technology special selection of supported schools Others? need personal contacts...

General Single big Projects financable via BMBF – Initiative from BMBF research (H.F: Wagner) –„Year of Physics 2000“: BMBF-DPG – Internet Portal „Welt der Physik“ Permanent outreach budget –Does exist for DESY and MPI research Institutes –None(!) for Universities Especially difficult to fund positions for people doing the work at universities (apart from employing students for some hours/week) Needs planning well ahead
