MEDIA RELATIONS LPC(O) Executive Board Meeting March 22-24, 2013

Riding strategies for media What are you trying to say? Who is the point of contact? Who is the face? Who do you talk to? How do you get published?

What are you trying to say? Clear message – First - What’s your goal? – Second - Who’s your audience? – FINAL- what’s your message?

Who is the point of contact? MP staff – Paid to have time to do it properly – Official and harder to ignore Communications Chair – Easier to speak on background President – May be best-known Liberal behind the scenes – May be too busy Candidate/MP – Should not be speaking off the cuff

Who is the face? Candidate/MP – The main person the public needs to know President – May be best-known Liberal behind the scenes – Formally the spokesperson for the EDA Communications Chair – Might be most professional communicator – Might not have authority to be the face MP staff – They aren’t paid to be famous

Who do you talk to? Local Paper, local cable, Snap Personal Relationships – Talk to your best friend – One point of contact – Don’t micro-manage Letters to the editor

How do you get published? Invite media – Get the times right Follow up – Confirm the best time Take your own pictures – They might not show Write your own articles – They will publish if they need filler Paid Advertising
