1 Sector Test – Preparation Layout in LSS7 Jan Uythoven (AB/BT) Thanks to Mike Lamont and the other ‘sector testers’

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 2 Sector Test: LSS7  Conditions and layout should be as close as possible to the final situation from injection to LSS7.R  By definition this is not possible for LSS7.R as this is the end of the sector to be tested Beam 2 Beam Dump Shielding Dispersion Suppressor Long Straight Section IP7

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 3 What should not be installed in LSS7  D4 and everything towards the IP  not installed or not required  D3 may be installed, but will not see any beam  Check interference with shielding behind dump  No collimators installed (no TCP, TCHS, TCM, TCG)  Q6 & DFBM should be installed  Consists of 6 x MQTLH, not part of dispersion suppressor (up to Q8)  Presently confirmed to be ready not installed DFBM

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 4 Installation of Beam Dump in LSS7  Temporary installation  Beam dump same type as used for TI 8 tests  But SPS type transport system attached to it, to avoid installation of fixings in the ceiling  Positioned on temporary support (blocks)  ‘Borrowed’ from TI 2  No additionally radiated equipment Beam dump in place in TI 8 (smaller tunnel) Additional shielding as used in TI 8 End of beam pipe

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 5 Position of temporary dump not installed Space for QRL return module Position dump at sufficient distance from QRL return module: - mechanical interference - radiation Q6  29 m

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 6 Beam Dump Area  Transport and installation of beam dump and additional shielding  Need to be integrated in LHC planning  Path taken for the transport  Time required for transport and installation (2 – 3 days)  Possibly obstruct passage once installed  Details of obstruction from drawing with dump in position  Assume 4 weeks for installation, operation, cool down, removal  Radiation issues  Remnant radiation: will effect access conditions after tests  Check with work planned in this area  Need of radiation monitoring  See talk of Helmut Vincke

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 7 Other additional equipment  Additional BDI  BCT half way between Q6 and beam dump: measure the intensities dumped on the TED  Additional BDI NOT installed  BLMs  As there should be some already on Q6  BPM at Q6 will also indicate beam, besides the screen  Radiation monitors near dump are foreseen  BTV  Standard BTV installed less than 1 m in front of Q6  Vacuum pipe between sector valve on Q6 up to the beam dump  Proposed is 4 sections of about 7 m each  Stops about half a meter before dump, standard AlTi window with CC protection against implosion  The VADL installed on the left of Q6 includes an ion pump + pirani + penning gauge for the part left of the sector valve  No additional vacuum pumping or instrumentation required

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 8 Access & Ventilation  Additional access door  Temporary access door about 800 m in the arc 7 – 6  Access to part of sector 6 – 7 will not be possible  At least one day before the test (closing the zone)  during the beam tests  2 – 3 days following the tests  See talk Pierre Ninin on the Temporary Access System  Collimation ventilation doors will not be installed  For handling radioactive air produced at the collimators  Not an issue for the sector tests (no collimators)  Don’t want the doors, or chicanes for final layout, to ease transport of equipment

Jan Uythoven, 2006, Layout in LSS7 Page 9 Conclusions  Layout in LSS7 as will be used for the sector test will be identical to the nominal situation up to and including Q6.R7  Only additional equipment foreseen:  Beam dump: TED from TI 2 and additional shielding  BCT in front of TED  Vacuum chamber between Q6 and TED  To be studied in more detail  Transport of TED  Effect of TED installation and radiation issues on the general LHC planning  Detailed layout drawing for sector test set-up in LSS7 to be made in the coming months
