ACHIEVEMENT AND RELATIONSHIPS Write for Life

Let’s review… What is resilience? What are the 7 resilience skills? What thinking trap are you most likely to fall into? What icebergs have you discovered in your life? In the lives of those around you?

Session Objectives: To maximize your success quotient by: Maximizing your achievement. Developing GRIT. Fostering positive relationships. Practicing positive communication techniques.

You are probably familiar with this equation? Distance Speed Time

Now relate distance to achievement: Distance Speed Time and Achievement Skill Effort where Effort Time Spent

What determines how much effort is spent? Self-discipline Self-discipline is a greater predictor of academic success In order to maximize achievement, you have to increase self-discipline This requires GRIT

True Grit True Grit (2010) Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross's father has been shot in cold blood by the coward Tom Chaney, and she is determined to bring him to justice. Enlisting the help of a trigger-happy, drunken U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, she sets out with him -- over his objections -- to hunt down Chaney. Her father's blood demands that she pursue the criminal into Indian territory and find him before a Texas Ranger named LeBoeuf catches him and brings him back to Texas for the murder of another man True Grit

GRIT: The combination of very high persistence and high passion for an objective Video

Self-discipline and GRIT Increase the time you spend on a task The more time you spend on a task multiplies your skill The more time spent on task, the more knowledge and skill “stick” The more effort you give, the more achievement you get

Assignment #1 Write about a time when you nearly gave up on something. What challenges did you have to overcome? How did you do it? How did you feel once you accomplished it?

Authentic Trust Why is trust important? Trust promotes productivity Acting with trust means acting in a way that shows belief in one’s integrity, dependability, and benevolence.-Jane Dutton

The ROCC of Trust R-eliability: doing what you say you will do O-penness: willingness to share information C-ompetence: you know what you are doing C-ompassion: you care about others

Think about the following questions as they relate to your relationships: 1. Are you reliable? Can people depend on you? What could you do to increase your reliability? 2. Are you open? Do you share information? Your feelings? What could you do to increase your openness? 3. Are you competent? Can people depend on what you produce? What can you do to increase your competence? 4. Are you compassionate? Do you treat people with consideration and respect if they are open with you? What can you do to show you care?
