Comprehensive Science 1
Compare and contrast the forces of friction and gravity. Hint: Use your worksheet from last class: “Different Forces”.
Friction is a contact force and objects touch, while gravity is a non-contact force and objects do not touch. Both are a force that can change the motion of an object. FRICTION - Contact force - Objects are touching GRAVITY - Non-contact Force -Objects not touching BOTH -Forces -Can change an objects direction
Review “Different Forces” worksheet Write in the correct answers so you can use the information in your study sets! All classes: VOCABULARY TEST NEXT CLASS

Force is described by it’s direction and strength. Arrows points in direction force is pushing or pulling. Size of arrow represents the size of the force. Long arrow = a lot of force Short arrow = a little bit of force box
Friction
1. Static friction – between objects that are not moving Keeps objects from moving 2. Kinetic Friction – between objects that are moving Slows objects down To reduce friction:: Apply a slippery substance called a lubricant to reduce contact between objects and reduce friction. Can you name some examples of a lubricant ? Oil on squeaky doors, soap or butter to remove jewelry stuck on fingers
Create an experiment using this question: How does surface affect friction? WAIT FOR ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE MOVING! 1. Use the demonstration to help you plan your idea. 2. Use the inquiry question to create your own hypothesis. 3. I will list the materials you can use in your investigation, they are all here on the counter. 4. You must circle or list all you materials before I will hand them out to you. DON’T FORGET QUANTITIES! 5. Once you have your materials you may begin MORE INSTRUCTIONS ON NEXT SLIDE
Be as creative as you want. Use a board as an incline if needed. We will continue this next class, so be sure to write your materials correctly. You may have to revise the list after you begin designing the experiment. These materials must be returned in good shape for the next class to use. Please do not cut or staple items. Use tape where needed
