State Test Results MSP/HSPE/EOC Presentation to the Shelton School District Board of Directors September 9, 2014

Comparison to State This presentation will compare the Shelton School District scores to those of students across the state Not an “average” – compares the percent of SSD who meet standard to percent of all students in the state who met standard on the tests Our challenge: 65.8% of students in SSD are eligible for F/R meals while 45.9% of students are eligible statewide – when our scores top state scores our kids are beating the odds!

SBAC Pilot In Spring 2014, Bordeaux and Mountain View Elementary Schools took part in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Pilot Students in grades 3-5 at those schools took the SBAC pilot tests for ELA (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics No scores were reported for the SBAC Pilot Schools Bordeaux and Mountain View’s Reading, Writing, and Mathematics MSP scores for are being used for accountability purposes and to calculate AYP Consequently, we have no district-wide MSP Reading, Writing, or Math scores for spring 2014 that reflect actual performance of the whole district

Sixth Grade Reading Increased from 66.4% in 2013 to 68.4% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 71.5% to 72.7%

Seventh Grade Reading Decreased from 64.9% in 2013 to 64.3% in 2014 Statewide scores decreased from 68.7% to 67.7%

Eighth Grade Reading Increased from 59.8% in 2013 to 70.7% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 66.3% to 71.5%

Tenth Grade Reading Decreased from 81.9% in 2013 to 78.9% in 2014 Statewide scores decreased from 83.6% to 82.6%

Reading Summary There was a slight increase in achievement at grade 6 statewide, which was mirrored in our district There was a slight decrease in achievement at grades 7 and 10 statewide, which was also mirrored in our district The most dramatic reading gains were seen at grade 8 where there was an increase from roughly 60% to 70% of students meeting standard – this was a larger increase than what was seen at the state level and OBJH continues to close the gap In seven years OBJH has gone from being a persistently underachieving school (bottom 5%) to having virtually the same reading achievement as students across the state

Sixth Grade Math Increased from 56.6% in 2013 to 62.5% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 59.3% to 63.6%

Seventh Grade Math Decreased from 64.2% in 2013 to 57.1% in 2014 Statewide scores decreased from 63.8% to 57.8%

Eighth Grade Math Increased from 59.8% in 2013 to 64.6% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 53.3% to 55.8%

All Grades Algebra EOC Increased from 42.9% in 2013 to 48.6% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 53.1% to 58.2%

All Grades Geometry EOC Decreased from 62.4% in 2013 to 16.0% in 2014 Statewide scores decreased from 76.5% to 53.4%

Math Summary There was a slight decrease in achievement at grade 7 statewide, which was mirrored in our district There was an increase in achievement at grades 6 and 8 statewide, which was also mirrored in our district At grade 8 our students have had higher achievement than students across the state for four years in a row – even though seven years ago they were considered a persistently underachieving school (bottom 5%) There was an increase in achievement on the Algebra EOC statewide which was mirrored in our district There appeared to be a dramatic decrease in achievement on the Geometry EOC, at least in part because of changes in testing rules

Seventh Grade Writing Decreased from 71.4% in 2013 to 70.2% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 71.0% to 71.1%

Tenth Grade Writing Decreased from 84.6% in 2013 to 84.3% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 84.9% to 85.3%

Writing Summary There was a slight decrease in writing achievement in our district at grades 7 and 10 There was a slight increase in writing achievement across the state at grades 7 and 10 Overall, in writing our students achieved very nearly on par with students across the state at grades 7 and 10

Fifth Grade Science Increased from 55.3% in 2013 to 61.3% in 2014 Statewide scores decreased from 66.6% to 66.4%

Eighth Grade Science Increased from 48.6% in 2013 to 58.3% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 64.8% to 67.1%

All Grades Biology EOC Decreased from 68.2% in 2013 to 65.2% in 2014 Statewide scores increased from 68.6% to 70.0%

Science Summary There was a slight increase in science achievement at grade 5 in our district, while there was a slight decrease statewide – we are closing the gap at grade 5 There was an increase in science achievement at grade 8 in our district, while there was a smaller increase statewide – we are also closing the gap at grade 8 We saw a decrease in science achievement on the Biology EOC in our district while there was a slight increase in achievement across the state
