Gergely Mikola, Group Corporate Affairs Director, International Personal Finance 26 January 2016, CEPS, Brussels Over-indebtedness of European Households - Myths and Realities

Leading provider of home credit and digital loans: active in eight countries in Europe and expanding overseas (Australia, Mexico) 2,6 million customers served by over 8,000 employees and 30,000 agents FTSE-250 Top Employer Award (Poland, 2014, Hungary 2013, 2015), Ethical business award Czech Republic Granted A+ rating by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) A thorough lending process: from an early assessment to weekly discussions with our customers About IPF – A sustainable business model

Responsible lending: a first step to prevent indebtedness o Customer information: detailed information in contracts, Call Centres and personal explanation o Credit risk: based on the relationship between customers and their agents, supported by bespoke application and behavioural scoring systems. o Rewarding collection rather than lending: agents are rewarded largely on the amount of money they collect rather than what they lend, so it is not in their interest to lend more than their customers can afford to repay. o Rejecting applications when unsustainable: eg. over 60% of demands are turned down in Hungary, even higher in Digital

Preventing and tackling over-indebtedness o ‘ Low and grow’ approach: starting gradually and safely o Agents close to IPF’s customers to address their needs and prevent further indebtedness o Responsible lending guidelines

Financial and social inclusion: how to bring improvements o Financial education programmes: support financial literacy programmes to help people make informed choices about their finances.  Spurring the debate: the example of the Academy of Family Finance, Provident Polska (reached over 6 million people)  Financial education workshops (Czech Republic)  Hablemos de dinero: partnership with Save the Children in Mexico o Social inclusion:  Czech Republic: empowering NGOs with We help with Provident  Romania: Little People Association
