Data Collection Method – Interview Etiquettes to keep in mind while taking an interview

Before the Interview  Place an appointment for the interview  If the person says to call later, Ensure you call at the time he/she has mentioned.  Prepare questions  Do your homework / research about the person you are to interview and topic of interview.  Set reminders for the interview.

For the Interview  Dress appropriately and be clean  Arrive mins early  Turn off your cell phone  Set aside a quiet place to speak.  Keep your recorder ready and tested.

During the Interview  First impressions very powerful  Halo effect or Devil effect  Shake hand firmly, say your full name and smile  find a balance between friendliness and objectivity.  Maintain Eye contact  re-confirm the purpose  if relevant specify what will happen to the data.  Listen to the full answer before preparing your next question.

Cont…  speak slowly in a soft, yet audible tone of voice  control your body language  know the questions and topic  ask all the questions.  Avoid asking over-used and unhelpful questions.

Ending the Interview  Ask if the respondent would like to give further details about anything or has any questions about the research  Thank the interviewee for his/her time!
