Mini Lesson: Leads Hook; A way to grab the reader's attention at the beginning of the story or essay

Snapshot Definition : A type of lead/hook that creates a vivid visual and makes your reader “see” what happened in your story Start with a detailed description of a significant incident/place Many nouns Some adjectives Action verbs

Snapshot Types Show a character’s movements or gestures. Describe a place. Listen to (and show) sounds and speech. Zoom in close on physical details of a person or place. Use more than one of the five senses. Paint a feeling in a setting WITHOUT saying what the feeling is.

Look at the difference… I saw a dog standing across the street yesterday. It was really scary. Do you have any questions?

Same Story… Snapshot details included! The dog was staring me down. For two seconds, all I could see were fangs, drool, and a huge black snout. The muscles on his back rippled underneath his short fur as he shifted his weight from left to right. He was practically swaying while he snarled and chomped his teeth. I backed away slowly and looked around for a safe place to hide. Two skinny trees, a cinderblock fence, and one car were my only options.

Dialogue Definition: The conversation between two or more character in a work of literature; can be used as a lead Start your story with people talking Use significant conversations Example: “I can’t believe you said that to my boss,” Bob said to Joe. “Well, after the way he offended me, I had no choice,” replied Joe.

Any Questions?
