Lesson Objective To write descriptively using adjectives.

Is this an effective description? It was a sunny day in the city of Metropolis. Clouds wandered aimlessly across the sky. The sun shone down on the buildings. The light reflected off the glass of the skyscrapers. The wind blew gently. In the park the trees stood tall. Cars drove past on the freeway, silently.

What are they?

Why use them?

Is this an effective description? It was a warm sunny day in the bustling city of Metropolis. Soft white clouds wandered aimlessly across the sky. The bright sun shone down on the tall, sleek buildings. The soft rays of sunlight reflected off the sparkling glass of the colossal skyscrapers. A gentle wind blew in between each of the buildings. In the expansive green park the billowy trees stood tall. Shiny grey cars drove past on the freeway, like a silent river of silver, flowing between the buildings.

Create a list of words to describe this image Bright Technological pointed spacious

Create a list of words to describe these images dark crowded polluted

Using one of these images, or an idea of your own making, write a description of life in a futuristic world.

Peer assessment Swap descriptions with someone sat near you. Using a different coloured pen or felt tip, underline all the adjectives (words that describe a noun) that you can find. Give a mark out of three using the following criteria: – 1 a few adjectives used – 2 some adjectives used – 3 loads of adjectives used

How confident are you at using adjectives in your writing?

Extension task If you used mostly positive adjectives in your description, consider how changing these words to more negative ones would affect your overall description.
