THE TARIFF OF ABONMINATIONS Jackson’s biggest crisis centered around a tariff passed in Prices of foreign goods went up and Southern Planters were against it. Southerners gave the protective tariff this nickname. Vice President John Calhoun took up the cause….he favored states rights. Daniel Webster delivers a big speech against states’ rights while others defended the idea of nullification ( the right of a state to declare federal laws illegal). Jackson felt the Union must be preserved…while Calhoun said the liberty of the state is above the Union. Dec Calhoun resigns as VP
Jackson’s Policy for Native Americans Jackson believes the Indians should give up their lands to settlers. Also believed that they would live more freely in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Tribes affected---Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, Cherokee and Choctaws 1828-Cherokee Tribe asked the Supreme Court to defend the rights of Indians in the Southeast. Court agreed with the Indians but Jackson ignored the decision. Trail of Tears— Indian Removal Act of let U.S. remove Native Americans from the eastern U.S. At Gunpoint, Indians signed treaties agreeing to leave lands. Cherokee held out until Chief John Ross led his people on a long march to Indian Territory. 1/8 of the Cherokee die on trip. Known as “The Trail Where They Cried”
OSCEOLA Seminole who refused to give up their lands in Florida. He refuses to sign treaty. Second Seminole War— —Osceola is captured….he dies a year later in prison.
