Active Learning Inviting students to participate in the learning process

Team based active learning Working in teams promotes engagement and collaboration Deeper learning and understanding about a topic

Applying active learning at the medical school 2010 Carnegie report called for reform of educating future physicians Neuroanatomy courses at the school of medicine and public health wanted to integrate active learning

Method Implement 3 phases of active learning  Pre-class quiz / activity  Individual readiness  Team based learning and application

Team based learning application Create a real-time quizzing student response system individually and within groups Integrates similar / same questions with individual readiness quiz Track points for both individual readiness and team based activities through the Moodle gradebook Expanded question types

Using and modifying the existing real- time quiz activity It was analyzed as a possible solution Additional functionality was required for team based learning Teaching and Research Application Development was hired to perform the updates

Active quiz module New module was renamed to active quiz New features and code infrastructure updated

Conclusions The medical school looks forward to using this in more of their classes going forward Allows for a much more involved engaged learning, and discussion in the classroom An integrated student response system or quiz, allows for better integrations with other parts of Moodle
