Soccer 101

History of Soccer 2500 B.C.-Researchers indicate it was played in China with balls made out of animal skin First World Cup is played in Uruguay with 13 teams Major League Soccer (MLS) begins as the top USA pro-soccer league.

Players and Positions Goalkeeper (Goalie)-Prevents the opposite team from scoring, and is the only player that can touch the ball with his/her hands. Defense Players-Role is to shut down the attack of the opposing team. Midfield Players-Play both offense and defense. Forwards- They finish the attack and try to score.

Rules and Terminology Play begins with a Kickoff, the kickoff is kicked from the center of the field. Goal- A method of scoring a point, when the ball crosses the cones. Throw-in- The throw-in is taken when the ball crosses completely over the touch line (Or Cones). Player must use both hands, and must throw behind and over head. Hand Ball- When a player other than the goalie touches the ball with his/her hand.

Rules and Terminology Foul- An illegal play (Knocking a player down, tripping, or grabbing). Corner Kick- A player from the attacking team kicks the ball from the corner closest to where the ball went out. Out of Bounds- The ball must cross completely over the cones to be called out of bounds.
