Niccolo Machiavelli Held public office in the Florentine government in the late 1400s and early 1500s. He wrote essays and poetry and produced his most famous work, The Prince. It was a book about politics and how to gain and keep power. The Prince set the standard for the modern concept of the state and how to go about enforcing it. One of the key ideas in his book was “the end justifies the means.” According to Machiavelli, a leader should try to do only good, but should be able to do evil if necessary. Machiavelli believed that if the ends, or results, were good, then a ruler was justified in using immoral methods, or means, to achieve those results.

Leonardo da Vinci Two of his most famous pieces of art – The Last Supper and The Mona Lisa 1. Leonardo da Vinci A ‘Renaissance Man’ is one who who was well educated and knowledgeable about a variety of subjects and skill. Da Vinci exemplified this ideal. Jan van Eyck Van Eyck’s Mystic Lamb

Jan van Eyck Born in what is today Belgium around 1395 Worked in the newly developing technique of oil painting. Oil dried more slowly than other paints, which allowed artists to work on specific sections for a longer time and create more detail. This helped van Eyck achieve the realism for which his work is known. Many argue whether van Eyck’s works were painted by him or his brother, Hubert.
