History of Hurricanes in Key West In 143 years, Key West has been hit by 52 storms- 34 Hurricanes and 18 Tropical Storms. – Last tropical storm (Issac) occurred on Aug 26 th, 2012 – Last Hurricane (Wilma, Cat. 5) occurred on Oct 15 th, 2005 Every 2.75 years, Key West gets hit or brushed by a storm. On average, Key West is directly hit by a hurricane every 5.96 years. Average wind speed of hurricanes in Key West 109 mph.

Hurricane Background Information Hurricane Season runs from 01 June to 30 November. In the event an evacuation is ordered, military personnel will be required to evacuate. – Although not required, dependents are highly encouraged to evacuate. Safe haven is located in Orlando, Fl. The order to evacuate will come from the Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station.

Hurricane Conditions v. Categories Condition is the state of readiness for MOHAWK depending upon the location, direction, and speed of the storm. Category refers to the wind speed and storm surge of the storm itself. Set by the National Hurricane Center

Conditions Condition 5: 01 December to 31 May – Not in Hurricane Season Condition 4: Destructive winds expected within 72 hours – Maintained continuously during Hurricane Season until heightened Condition 3: Destructive winds expected within 48 hours Condition 2: Destructive winds expected within 24 hours Condition 1: Destructive winds expected within 12 hours

Categories Category 1: (74-95 mph winds) Sigsbee Park Housing may be evacuated Category 2: ( mph winds) Sigsbee Park Housing and other housing may be evacuated depending on hurricane path Category 3, 4, or 5: (>111 mph winds) State Law directs that EVERYONE must evacuate to the mainland

Notification Process The order to evacuate will be communicated to all units via: Broadcasted on AM Radio 530 and TV Channel 16 Automated phone-based Alert Warning System “AWS” Sector Key West also has a Hurricane Hot Line number (305) , option 2.

Alert Warning System “AWS” This is the quickest way to receive a notification about impending weather and evacuation. Both crewmembers and dependents receive notifications that are sent directly to the home phone or cell phone of your choice. Every crewmember should enter their contact information as well as their dependents contact information into Direct Access. Linked to Coast Guard Personnel Accountability & Assessment System (CGPAAS)

Sheltering Information Coast Guard uses NAS Key West hurricane shelters. Sheltering assignments are based on you government residence. Shelters are only opened during hurricane conditions Categories 1 or 2. Shelters provide TV, microwave, and a small refrigerator. Rooms have two single beds with bedding. – No medical care is provided at shelters. – No pets allowed.

Sheltering Information If medical care is needed, contact Sector Key West’s Health Services Branch at There is pet shelters available in building A-931 at NAS Boca Chica. – Pets must be kenneled/caged – You must provide food, water, and bowls – Bring toys and/or blankets Smoking is prohibited in all shelters. Limit vehicles to one per family. – No boats/trailers are allowed at the shelter

Evacuation Process If you choose to leave the Keys, without the mandated order to evacuate, you will NOT be entitled to reimbursement for incurred expenses. If mandated evacuation order is made, highest priority is to leave safely and quickly. Evacuate to Orlando, FL

Evacuation to Safe Haven Military personnel must have an ODU uniform available. If dependents require travel advances prior to departure: Available one day prior to departing from at Sector KW SPO. Hotel reservations are already made for military personnel and dependents. Dependents not relocating to Orlando much contact the Hurricane Evacuation Assistance Team by phone upon arrival to their alternate safe haven. Generates orders for reimbursement Phone: (786)

Evacuation to Safe Haven Con’t Active duty personnel and dependents arriving in Orlando are required to physically check-in upon arrival. Check-in located at Rosen Plaza (9700) Orders will be issued upon checking-in Check-in with your assigned hurricane point of contact once daily by 1030 each morning. Bring your pets but provide a cage or kennel.

Post Hurricane Process Do not return to the Keys until “All Clear” is issued by the Sector Commander. Contact hurricane point of contact upon arrival to the Keys. If damage has occurred to your home, take pictures for insurance claims Travel claims will be processed by MOHAWK. Keep hotel receipts for reimbursements.
