Devious (adjective) a) Done in an underhanded manner; tricky; shifty b) Straying from a straight or direct course c) Departing from the correct or proper way; erring EX. The young child quickly learned devious methods for getting attention.

Duplicity (noun) a) Deliberate deception or trickery by speaking or acting in two different ways concerning the same matter a) Otherwise known as being “two-faced” EX. Fictitious (adjective) a) Adopted or assumed in order to deceive; false b) Of fiction; imaginary; unreal EX. Harry Potter is a fictitious character who attends Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft.

Guileless (adjective) a) Free of slyness or craftiness; simple and innocent EX. The children’s guileless account of the incident was accepted as true.

Gullible (adjective) a) Easily deceived or fooled EX. Katie is so gullible that she believed that striped paint came in spray cans.

Hypocritical (adjective) a) Pretending to have some desirable or publicly approved attitude; insincere EX. Tartuffe is a hypocritical character who pretends to be kind and generous.

Masquerade (intrans. verb; noun) a) To have or put on a deceptive appearance; to wear a mask or disguise b) A dance or party at which masks and fancy costumes are worn c) A disguise or false outward show; pretense d) An involved scheme EX. Jim stowed away on the ship and masqueraded as a member of the crew.

Overt (adjective) a) Open and observable; apparent EX. The cat hissed when the child made an overt attempt to grab it.

Reputable (adjective) a) Having a good name; well thought of; honorable EX. A reputable company should guarantee its products.

Veracity (noun) a) Devotion to the truth; honesty b) Conformity to the truth or fact; accuracy and precision EX. The veracity of his testimony was supported by other witnesses.
