1A1 English 20 th March, 2015 Objectives: To find examples of the uses of poetic devices.

Homework: Over the weekend, you must… Write a poem on a topic of your choice. Try to include at least three of the five poetic devices that will be reviewed at the beginning of today’s class.

Yesterday’s lesson Alliteration Assonance Hyperbole Simile Onomatopoeia

Alliteration The repetition of consonants at the start of words. PPpppp E.g. “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” (Remember a consonant is a letter of the alphabet that is not a vowel.)

Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds at the beginning of words, or within words. E.g. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The early bird catches the worm. (Five letters of the alphabet are vowels: A, E, I, O, U.)

Hyperbole Deliberate exaggeration. E.g. “It was packed to the rafters.”

Onomatopoeia Words similar to the sounds they are describing. E.g. Beep, boom, clap, meow, moo, oink, splash & zoom.

Simile Comparisons using the words “like” or “as.” E.g. As strong as an ox. As white as snow. As black as coal. As light as a feather.

Activity 1: Fill in the missing lyrics in your copy of the song “Solitaire.” When you have done this, work in pairs to identify the poetic device that has been used in the chorus.

Activity 1:

Activity 1: Poetic device used? Simile! Hard like a rock, cold like stone White like a diamond, black like coal Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair Myself when you’re not there

Activity 2: Closely read your copy of Jessie Pope’s poem “Noise.” With your partner, try to identify as many poetic devices as you can in the text.

Activity 2: What poetic devices did you find? Is there evidence of alliteration, onomatopoeia?
