INTEGER RULES

Adding Integers Adding IntegersRule # 1: Same Signs When adding integers with same signs, you add the numbers and write the common sign. Example = (-4) = -10 Rule # 2: Different Signs When adding integers with different signs, you subtract the integers and use the sign of the greater value. Exampl = (-4) = 2 *NOTE: If you are having a hard time adding integers, using a number line helps!

Subtracting Integers The number one rule for subtracting integers is…ADD its opposite Example Step 1: Change the minus sign to a plus sign, hence the rule ADD Step 2: Find the opposite of the second number 5 + (- 6) Step 3: Use the rule of adding integers with different signs. You subtract then use the sign of the greater value 5 + (- 6) = - 1 Subtracting Multiple Integers: Always solve from LEFT to RIGHT Example 5-(-10) Step 1: Start with the first two numbers, and follow the rule in subtracting. No shortcuts!! 5-(-10)-3 = Step 2: Bring down the other numbers and go back to step = = 11

Multiplying Integers Rule # 1: Same Signs When multiplying integers with same signs, the product is always POSITIVE Example 5 x 10 = x (-4) = 24 Rule # 2: Different Signs When multiplying integers with different signs, the product is always NEGATIVE Example 5 x -10 = x (-4) = -24

Dividing Integers Rule # 1: Same Signs When dividing integers with same signs, the quotient is always POSITIVE Example 10 / 10 = / (-4) = 4 Rule # 2: Different Signs When dividing integers with different signs, the quotient is always NEGATIVE Example 50 / -10 = / (-4) = -16 NOTE: you may notice the rules for multiplying and dividing are practically the same. :)
