Welcome to Day 4

Day 4: Looking forward Apply skills learned during the week to managing emergency scale-up and plan how to apply continue learning between now and Workshop 2

Session Leadership Challenges in scale-up (Case work 4)

Session 1.4.1: Objectives Learning objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Identify key steps to plan and manage scaling up of emergency operations Describe the key challenges and solutions for emergency scale-up

What is scale-up ? Rapidly increasing the operational capacity of the country team/office to meet a radically increased demand for assistance within a very short time period

Some selected tips Scale up evenly – programme and programme support Accept help Expand your HR team Expect four times more finance work Make sure staff have experience Check your inventory systems Do not ignore the small things…staff need a phone, a bed, a desk…

Understand the stress on the team and yourself Actively analyse and manage new risks Accept that the emergency has impacted your ‘normal’ programme –Learn from past lessons, seek advice from others Plan for scaling down while scaling up

Leadership skills and behaviours Staff and partners need strong leadership as they take on new functions and increased work Some will need extra ‘love’ and motivational support as they take on new responsibilities The leader must be aware of the ‘emotional’ make-up of their team

Scaling down… Managers must also plan for scale-down at the end of the emergency Scale-down planning includes proper contractual arrangements to ensure that material resources can be properly disposed of and relationships with staff hired specifically for the emergency response can be ended fairly and efficiently

When the need for scale-up arrives: Know where to get help (follow tips) Be open to help Seek it out Get it Use it
