From Vision to Action ----The Crucial Step to Environmental Success in Sweden

Contents Sweden in Brief The Swede's environmental awareness development in global context and its responses From strategy to approaches Factors needed to realize the transition from vision to action Hints for us

Sweden in Brief Sweden the fifth largest country in Europe 1/6 land is north of the Arctic circle Forests 70 % Mountains 17 % Lakes and rivers 9 % Farmland 6 % Urban areas no more than 1%

The Swede's environmental awareness development in global context and its responses The UN Conference on the Human Environment in 1972 UN Conference on Environment and Development (The Earth Summit) in 1992 Sustainable development and Agenda 21 The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002

From Strategy to Approaches Strategy Sustainable development is the overall objective of Swedish government policy. The national strategy is a synthesis of the objectives, measures includes all dimensions of sustainable development - ecological, social, cultural, and economic. Approaches Visions and objectives Core areas Consultations and dialogue Monitoring and evaluation Indicators - an aid to monitoring

Factors needed to realize the transition from vision to action The Swede's love of nature Good communication and cooperation Awareness promotion Economic incentives Impact assessments Various monitoring and evaluation tools Constant research

The Swede's love of nature It seems as if the temperament of the entire Swedish national soul is determined by the dramatic changes of the season.

Nature Shapes the Swede’s National Holidays Their national holidays and festivals all have strong elements and invocations of the nature, and of the changing seasons: Walpurgis Night in Spring Midsummer Eve in Summer The Crayfish Party in Autumn Lucia and Christmas in Winter

The Midsummer Eve Easter

Hints for us Lessons learnt from the activities in Sweden Vision of the development Cooperation between various stakeholders Formulation of well-defined and action-oriented objectives Effective system of monitoring and evaluation Concrete measures in minor areas National awareness promotion esp. among the youth Relevant law is needed Regulation on small fields e.g. detailed waste separation list Economic incentives Environmental education ( No beneficial organizations and NGOs)

Conclusion “It is said that to everything, there is a season. The world today needs to usher in a season of transformation as a season of stewardship”. Let it be a season for us to make Chinese civilization ever lasting!
