BASIC LAB SAFETY & EQUIPMENT Ms. Goodwin Biology

BASIC LAB SAFETY 1. Read all directions and labels carefully. 2. Follow instructions exactly. Do not skip steps. 3. Wear your apron and safety goggles as directed. 4. Use proper conduct in the laboratory at all times. No horseplay! 5. Tie back long hair. Do not wear loose fitting clothes or jewelry that dangles. 6. Do not leave an experiment unattended. 7. Never taste or smell substances unless your teacher tells you to do so. 8. Never handle equipment or conduct an experiment without supervision. 9. Use caution with all heat sources and glassware. 10. Keep your work area clean. Clean your work area and all equipment when you are finished.

BASIC LAB EQUIPMENT  Microscope- used to see tiny objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye  Flask- a glass container with a long neck; sometimes used to heat liquids  Test tube- sealed on one end, usually used to hold liquids  Test tube rack- used to hold test tubes

 Bunsen burner- uses gas to produce a hot blue flame  Funnel- used to pour liquids or powders into containers with small openings  Pipette- useful for adding liquid one drop at a time  Beaker- cylinder shaped; used for pouring

 Graduated Cylinder- used to measure the volume of liquids in centimeters  Crucible- heat resistant container that holds metals as they are melted
