ADOLESCENT SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT  G. Stanley Hall: Sturm and Drang (Storm and Stress)  Hormonal changes have some effect on the activity levels, mood swings and aggressive tendencies

PARENTAL RELATIONSHIPS  Teens striving for greater freedom; results in more arguing with parents  Teens maintain that personal choices should be made by them  Quest for Independence: less time spent with family & greater emotional attachment to non-family members  Continue to share same broader views (politics, religion)

Parent and Peer Influence  Although teens become independent of their parents as they grow older, they nevertheless relate to their parents on a number of things, including religiosity and career choices. Peer approval and relationships are also very important.

PEER RELATIONSHIPS  Most frequent providers of emotional and social support  Cliques: peer groups of 5 to 10 people; join for stability and a sense of belonging  Crowds: larger group of several cliques  Peer Influence: dress, hairstyles, speech  Peer pressure peaks at age 15 and decreases after age 17
