What are Glaciers? Masses of ice formed on land by the compaction of snow.  Factor of glacier movement: gravity (caused by weight of ice)
Presentation transcript:

How does a glacier build up? A glacier builds up by snow piling up, and from cold weather, it eventually freezes into a glacier. Snow will compact over time and get rid of the air leaving ice.

GLACIERS A glacier is a large mass of snow, re- crystallized ice, and rock debris. It stays cold by building and re- freezing.

How does it stay cold?

How does a glacier polish rock? It will move over the rock and abrade the rock.

What does a glacier deposit? A glacier deposits when it melts and the sediment returns to earth.

How does a glacier move? When the base is at melting temperature it becomes slippery and moves. Withdrawal – pull back, remove Deposit – give it to
