Why do you need to cite? Avoids plagiarism Gives credit to the person who originally wrote, said, or thought it. Adds credibility to the paper

When should citation be used? Anytime a quote, paraphrase, or summary of another person’s work is used. When in doubt, cite it! It is better to be safe than sorry You need to change 90% of the words before you can claim it as your own.

How to Cite in-text When citing a quote, summary, or paraphrase within a paper the author’s last name or first major word of the title is used followed by the page number. (Fitzgerald 1) OR If the author or title of the piece is introduced first, just the page number is cited in parentheses (2). Examples Examples will be shown on next slide.

Imbedded In-Text Citation Example: Text: F. Scott Fitzgerald used ”…a single green light, minute and far away…” ( 26) to represent Gatsby’s longing for Daisy. OR Reference: The use of ”…a single green light, minute and far away…” ( Fitzgerald 26) to represent Gatsby’s longing for Daisy is a symbol that is still used to today to also represent the corruption of the American Dream.
