Summary Yearly checkups –Identifies children that have depression –Not all children go to the doctor for checkups Survey conducted every fall –Inexpensive way to identify teens, but they may lie Law P.A (HB 4672) was enacted to help students grades 7-12 that suffer from depression. –Gives the children a support system.

Survey Data and Graphs We Surveyed: 40 Sixth Graders 22 Seventh Graders 23 Eighth Graders More then one in every four 7 th graders say. They are not comfortable talking to the school social worker. 41% seventh graders don’t know what teen mental health is.

Additional Survey Data and Graphs We Surveyed: 40 Sixth Graders  22 Seventh Graders  23 Eighth Graders ½ of the sixth graders surveyed Have had health. 43% of 8 th graders are not comfortable talking to the school social worker.

Interviews Benjamin Garber - Psychiatrist for a private practice Do teens you work with also work with their school social worker? Sometimes I like to use the school social worker to help my patient deal specifically with school related issues since they appreciate the school environment better than I can. Most social workers that I have had contact with be helpful as long as they focus on what needs to be addressed. Jasmine Ashakih- Jasmine works with adults and adolescents with mental illnesses in the University of Michigan Psychiatry unit. Many of her patients are homeless. Which levels of government are working with this issue? What are they doing? A proposed law is currently in Congress (as of 2/11) that would call for an extension of the existing child with disabilities act (from 1975). This would enhance services so that more resources can be provided in schools before students have major problems that affect the rest of their lives.

Interview Dr. Debra Pacchiano- For the last ten years she has been with the Ounce of Prevention Fund, a large non-for-profit focused on closing the achievement gap for children in poverty through the provision of, research about and advocacy for high quality early education, birth to five. How can these policies be improved? Learn from fellow professionals in public health. Every problem can be tackled with 3-tiered approach. Universal interventions. Intervention prevention. Prevention as well as intervention. Mrs. Leigh Stein- Mrs. Stein works as a social worker at Edgewood middle school.
