LOUIS NAPOLEON III ( )  He was the nephew and heir for Napoleon I.  Napoleon III was the president of the first French Republic.  Spouse: Eugénie de Montijo  Religion: Roman Catholic

THE SECOND NAPOLEONIC EMPIRE  Napoleon controlled  Armed forces  Police  Civil service  He introduced legislation.  Declared war.

EARLY DOMESTIC POLICIES  Believed in using government resources to stimulate the national economy  Government subsidies to construct  Railroads  Harbors  Roads  Canals  These improvements tripled the iron production  Vast reconstruction of Paris built modern broad boulevards, spacious buildings, circular plazas, public squares, and an underground sewage system.

FOREIGN POLICY  He was not good at dealing with Foreign affairs.  He sent troops to Mexico looking to dominate Mexican markets for French goods  Installed Archduke Maximilian of Austria as the new emperor of Mexico  French troops brought back to France Max became an emperor without an army  Max surrendered to Liberal Mexican forces in May Cinco de Mayo?  Max was later executed

FOREIGN POLICY CONT….  Crimean war(1853) was a war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire.  Napoleon got involved because he felt that Russia “insulted” France  With England and France allied with the Ottoman Empire, Russia turns to Austria for help. Austria remains neutral.  Russian’s lost, the war ended in March 1856 by signing yet another Treaty of Paris.  250,000 Deaths. 60% caused by disease

END OF REIGN  Napoleon’s reign ended on September 4 th  He later died on January 9 th 8173
