EXPANSION Creating more “colorful” sentences -ED IN THE BEGINNING OF A SENTENCE

Why do we do this? Varying sentence beginnings is what makes your writing flow. It’s boring to keep reading “the” or “a.” Today we will learn another way to begin a sentence. This will help add some “flavor” to your writing.

-ed + who/what + action Example: Tired from school, ED the girl WHO fell asleep on the couch the moment her head hit the pillow. ACTION

Noun-part + ed + who/what + action Example: Exhausted from the race, -ED the runner WHO collapsed at the side line waiting for assistance. ACTION LET’S TRY A FEW TOGETHER!

More Samples Drenched from the pouring rain, Mary took off her coat, dried herself, and tried to not create a mess.

More Samples Relieved that the test was over, Carly wiped her forehead, sat back, and watched the other students continue to work.

More Samples Frightened from the lightening, the kitten ran under the sofa, shivered, and refused to come out.

PRACTICE TOGETHER

NOW YOU TRY! -ED + WHO/WHAT + EXPANDER (WITH) + ACTION + ACTION + -ED + WHO/WHAT + ACTION + ACTION + WHERE -ED + WHO/WHAT + ACTION + ACTION + WHEN + WHERE
