Areas of Learning This term we are going to be doing work based on the area we live - Wor Place We will attempt to look at many aspects including The history of Newcastle and Gateshead and how the area has changed over time The river Tyne and the bridges In addition to this topic we will also be having an election/democracy week where we will be planning our own mini topic linked to British values and democracy. We will also be having a healthy school week including sport and a mini Blaydon race. We will make links to all our areas of learning including written work linked to our topics. We hope to visit Newcastle and the quayside to visit the bridges. Global citizens Global issues and encouraging children to see the world through other eyes is important. In an increasingly interconnected world, we need to learn be able to engage in communication with people from a wide range of different cultures and traditions. This term we will be looking at racism through ‘Show racism the red card’. Creativity and a love of learning Through a creative curriculum each exciting term is aimed to inspire the children to LEARN, and most importantly... enjoy learning. The children will learn the skills, knowledge and processes that help them to become independent learners who are also able to collaborate effectively in problem solving situations. Skills for life During the year pupils will have opportunties to explore, imagine and create, while being equipped with many life skills. The aim is to inspire children and develop their imagination and practical skills. The whole Child We will be developing spiritually and morally in RE studying bible scripture, the Eucharist and Lent. Also we will have many opportunities for quiet reflection and worship in class and school liturgies. We will be developing socially in PSHE, in particular through our British Values mini topic.. Wor Place. Year 3 / 4 Summer term – Mrs Murdy
English Through our work in English, we will be listening to and discussing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts; Increasing familiarity with a range of books and retelling some of these orally taking notes and writing fact files and information texts; writing; Reading and performing poems; and using these examples to help them plan their writing. We will be looking at how we can improve and edit our own work and use peer assessment to help support one another. Children will continue to learn to a wide range of words and increase their fluency in reading and focus on understanding what they have read. We will be using the Lexia Reading programme to support reading and spelling. They will be consolidating grammatical terminolgy we have covered over the course of the year. They will continue to learn new spelling rules and consolidate previous spelling rules learnt through the year. We will also be having a focus on poetry linked to nature and poetry recitals at the end of the term. Religious Education During this term, as always, RE will shape many of the things we do each day, with Christ being the centre of our school. Our topics include: New life The Universal Church Reconciliation Islam Mathematics Over the next term, maths will include consolidation of previous work throughout the year and include: Number, place value and rounding Mental addition and subtraction Multiplication and division Geometry: shapes and symmetry Measuring We will also continue with our weekly times tables challenge. Geographical Understanding As geographers, we will be learning about the physical features of our local area and beyond and doing some field work. We will be looking at local area maps Design and technology As designers we will be designing making and evaluating our own bridges, choosing suitable materials to build them with and testing them for strength. Science Skills As scientists we will be looking at living things and their habitats; recognise how they can be grouped in a variety of ways; explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in the local and wider environment; recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things. Art This term we will be sketching/using water colours to create images of the different landmarks of our area, e.g. Angel of the North, The bridges, The Sage. We will also be looking at some local artists work. Physical Education This term we will be having coaching on mini tennis and also doing hoopstarz (hoola hooping to music). We will also being doing some athletics this term. Computing We will continue to build on our skills in computing and look at different ways of communicating. Languages The children will continue with weekly French lessons with Mrs Innerdale.
