Scientific Method Cornell Notes Directions: if something is written in red, just follow the red directions, do NOT write down the information. Highlight any words that are written in blue – yes, you still have to write this information in your notes. ALL notes, including titles and steps, are written on the RIGHT side of your Cornell notes. Add 8 numbered connections and a 5 sentence summary after you complete your notes and highlighting.

 Skip a line under your title before writing your notes.

 The scientific method is a set of steps used to solve a problem.  (did you remember to highlight the words in blue?)

 The scientific method can be done out of order and steps can be repeated or skipped.

 Skip a line on your notes before going on to the next set of notes.

Step One: Ask a Question

 Questions are based on observations of things around you.

 Skip a line on your notes before going on to the next set of notes.

Step Two: Form a Hypothesis

 A hypothesis is an educated guess or possible explanation for your question. It must be testable.

 Skip a line on your notes before going on to the next set of notes.

Step Three: Test the Hypothesis

 The hypothesis is tested using a controlled experiment.

 Two groups are tested in a controlled experiment.

 The experimental group has only one thing different from the control group.

 The one thing that changes is called the variable.

 Skip a line on your notes before going on to the next set of notes.

Step Four: Analyze Your Results (or Data)

 Data is analyzed by putting it into graphs, charts, and tables.

 Skip a line on your notes before going on to the next set of notes.

Step Five: Form (or Draw) A Conclusion

 The conclusion tells whether the hypothesis agreed or disagreed with the data from the experiment.

 The conclusion also tells what you learned during the experiment.

 Skip a line on your notes before going on to the next set of notes.

Step Six: Communicate Your Results

 Scientists communicate results by writing and speaking about them.

When you have finished with your highlighting, add your 8 numbered connections and your 5 sentence summary to finish this paper.
