Update on GECAFS Food System Conceptual Framework Gabarone, Botswana 4 July 2005
What is a food system? Access Availability Utilisation GECAFS Science Plan bases its notion of a food system on three components:
FAO bases its notion of food systems on a number of human activities Producing food Processing & packaging food Distribution & retailing food Consuming food
1º production Providers and sellers of inputs, Farmers (big and small), buyers of produce Processing & Packaging Middle men who buy and sell, processing industry, packaging industry Distribution & retail Supermarkets, local markets, transporters, government institutions, international markets, advertising, trade regulation Consumption Consumers w/ preferences, preparation and utilization requirements Availability Production Exchange distribution Access Affordability Allocation preference Utilization Nutritional value Social value Food safety In reality there are more activities and more outcomes….
Demographic Economic Socio-political Cultural Science and technology Environmental People who construct scenarios use six categories of drivers:
GECAFS primarily interested in Global Environmental Change Changes in: Land cover & soils Atmospheric composition Climate variability & means Water availability & quality Nutrient availability & cycling Biodiversity Sea currents & salinity Sea level
Demographic Economic Socio-political Cultural Science & Technology DRIVERS Non human- induced drivers e.g. Volcanoes Earthquakes GEC DRIVERS Changes in: Land cover & soils Atmospheric composition Climate variability & means Water availability & quality Nutrient availability & cycling Biodiversity Sea currents & salinity Sea level Relationship between the drivers
Social and ecological well-being Food Security Environmental Security Other Securities
Contributing to Food Security: Food Availability (produce, exchange, distribution) Food Accessibility (affordability, allocation, preference) Food Utilization (nutritional value, social value, food safety) Contributing to Other Securities: Income Employment Wealth Social & political capital Human capital Infrastructure Peace Insurance Contributing to Env Security: Natural Capital (ecosystem services function) Access to NC assured OUTCOMES
