Food Webs Food Webs are Food Chains that intersect each other. Food webs are what really happens in nature.
Energy in Ecology How is energy transferred?. Energy  All ecosystems must transfer energy.  Energy flows in ONE DIRECTION  Heat Energy (Sun)  changes.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.

Food Chains By: Nicole Charles

INTRODUCTION A food chain is a community or organisms where one member is eaten in turn by another member. Food chains can involve any type of living thing including, plants, animals, and people. These food chains ultimately become a food web: a community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains.

Levels of Food Chains Level 1 – Producers – organisms that make there own food Level 2 – Primary Consumer (herbivores) – only eat plants Level 3 – Secondary Consumer (carnivores) – eat the herbivores Level 4 – Tertiary Consumer – carnivores or omnivores

To begin – click start in the bottom left hand box  HAVE FUN! Task Visit the website Food Chains Game and play the game to become more familiar with food chains Next – your task is to build you own food web. Go to Build a Food Web to get started To begin – click start in the bottom left hand box  HAVE FUN! 3. Answer the four problems on the next slide in your science journal and hand it in.

Review Questions 1. Which of the following organisms could be the primary source of energy for a food chain? earthworm green algae ladybug 2. Which category best describes an animal that only eats plants? producer herbivore carnivore 3. Which of the following defines an omnivore? a special kind of carnivore a producer that eats meat a consumer of plants and animals 4. Which of the following describes what a food chain shows? how animals move about in their community which foods in a community grow the best how energy travels in a community

Conclusion Your final task is to create a food chain or food web of your choice using the large white paper in the art center. It must have at least 3 strands of including a producer and two consumers. - Make sure your arrows are drawn in the correct direction - Please draw a picture and write a brief description for each stage

Evaluation You will be evaluated on your food web design on paper using a 3,2,1 scoring format. 3: 3+ strands, picture and description written neatly with detail 2: 2 strands, some description and some pictures 1: 1 strand, little picture and little description
