History of Citrus Citrus is believed to have originated in the southeast part of Asia China, India and Burma. It was brought to Europe by Alexander the Great from India and greece and the Persian empire in the 4th century BC. Later in 1707 the spanish brought with them oranges and lemons to the new world to grow so to prevent scurvy on the voyage home. California and Florida became the largest grower in north america in 1849.
