February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Outline: Status and overview of activities: –Platforms and staircases –Muon Filters and beam plugs –Support Structures –Nacelles –Chamber support panels –Services Schedule Integration and Installation

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Platforms and staircases behind M5 (US-side) Due to work on cryoline, installation could take place only in October 2005

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Platforms and staircases behind M5 (PZ-side) Installation scheduled for February 2006

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Muon Filters: MF4 was completed in April 2005 Traction systems are installed Filter on US-side in its final position Beam Plugs: To be delivered in February 2006 Installation scheduled for March 2006 Muon Filters and Beam Plugs

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Installation of both towers finished in Nov/Dec 2005 Gas racks Electronics racks Top beams for chamber support panels will be mounted this week General Support Structure

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Suspended Platforms Order placed with ALCLIC (CH) Two suspended platforms will be delivered (with CE-certificate) end of February Acceptance by SC hopefully early March 2006 Work on their integration (guiding and suspension) in the muon system currently ongoing. To speed up installation of services (cables, gas pipes, etc.), ordering of a 3 rd platform is foreseen.

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Production for M4+M5 panels finished, for M2+M3 ongoing in COSPAL (IT) Panels have precision holes for ‘balconies’ A prototype wall has been extensively tested in LNF with a load of 1.8tons Installation in LHCb from March-May 2006 Chamber Support Walls

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Installation sequence for each half station: Lifting tool installation Panel installation 1.Panel in vertical position 2.Installation of ~30 ‘balconies’ 3.Fixation of 30m copper braid 4.Mounting of ~100 cable supports 5.Panel lifting 6.Positioning of the following panel 7.Gluing & riveting 8.Soldering for electrical safety 9.Check of ‘balcony’ alignment (with ruler) -> Less than one working day for each panel: -> One half-station a week Chamber Support Walls

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Services: Cabling Concept: Confection and testing of cables for stations M4+M5 ongoing at CERN, using prototype cables. -> The rest to be done in Italy. Horizontal routing for cables between and behind chambers

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Chamber Gas connector Rilsan tube T-piece with Capillary Copper Distribution box Services: Gas System Overall design: Described in EDMS document Distribution racks for M2-M5 with 18 ch. manifolds have been installed. Internal Gas Piping: After the ageing test we decided to connect chambers in parallel -> Impedance adjustment will be done using capillaries (  0.5mm, 2.5cm long)

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Cooling for FE-boards: In order to avoid hot spots close to the beam pipe in M2/M3, air blowers are foreseen for both sides, providing an airflow of about 400m 3 /h (enough to remove about 2.5kW of dissipated power by air). Distribution principle: Temperature reduction due to cooling: ΔT 2,3 ~ 7.5 o C Hoses have 30mm diameter Something similar is planned for M1 Schedule: Blowers for M2-M3 ready for installation in April 2006 Services: Cooling

12 Chamber Positioning The chambers will be correctly positioned on the walls (~1mm precision), using the precise positioning of chamber supports (‘balconies’) as starting point. The position of each chamber will be measured with respect to reference points placed on the border of the half station support panels by means of a laser distance meter. Chamber fixation “balcony” Half station chamber Reference point

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Schedule: 1.Refurbishing of zone behind M5 and mounting Completed by of general support structures Feb Integration of nacelles and guiding systemFeb Installation chamber support panels US-side: March 2006 PZ-side:April On detector cabling, gas piping etc US-side: April-June 2006 PZ-side:July-Sept M2-M5 Chamber installation US-side:May-August 2006 PZ-side:Sep Jan Installation of M1 station Jan-March 2007 Installation Overview

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Muon System Installation schedule Chamber support panels and services will be installed by technicians of the collaborating institutes -> 104 man weeks Chambers and electronics will be installed and commissioned by 2 teams of 3-4 people of the muon group -> 220 man weeks

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Conclusions Despite the delay caused by the installation/commissioning of the cryoline, good progress has been made with the muon system infrastructure in The schedule for the installation of the M2-M5 infrastructure, services and chambers remains tight and requires close monitoring. We are aiming at having M2-M5 completed and as much as possible of M1 installed at the LHC start-up in 2007.

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Installation and Maintenance Positions Old and New Installation scenarios:

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Muon System Installation schedule

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Muon System Installation schedule

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt Status: Work on M1 integration has been resumed in 11/2004 (M2-M5 integration had and has priority) Issues which have to addressed: Gantry design and impact on M1-> done Constraints from neighbouring detectors -> established Attachment of M1 on the top and guiding on the bottom -> ideas exist Racks for M1 in the ‘bunker’ -> ok Cable routing-> extensive studies required Cooling issues-> study has to be resumed Plans: Solve outstanding issues in Implement infrastructure for M1 in 2006 M1 Integration

February 14, Comprehensive Review B. Schmidt M1 Integration Conceptually could be done this way: It is not easy to fit a cable- chain and fixations into the space available (1100 cables on each side !)
