Modern rugby mauling Click The forming of an effective rolling maul More about modern rugby mauling “As modern defenses are getting stronger and stronger, effective mauling is getting more and more important A rolling maul is a very effective method to draw the inside defenders into the maul situation and by doing so, the mauling team weakens the close defenses. It is an easy and very effective way to get over the advantage line. What does the term “effective rolling maul” mean? An effective rolling maul is a well formed and balanced maul, moving forward, with the ball at the back of the maul, ready to be played if necessary.” – Jan Oberholzer Back to Home Page

The forming of an effective rolling maul Modern rugby mauling Ball carrier The ball carrier is held up and waits for support Primary blockers The primary blockers arrive and bind to the ball carrier Ripper The ripper takes the ball away from the ball carrier Secondary blockers Blockers bind over the ripper Blockers bind over the ripper The secondary blockers arrive and bind over the ripper to each other. The ripper is now loose and moves backwards, while the maul moves forward The ripper is now at the back of the maul, from where he can take the ball forward, if necessary Coaching Video Clip of the Maul Photo 1 Photo 2Photo 3 Photo 4 Photo 5Photo 6 Back to Home Page
