In your notebooks… Veterans are coming to speak with you tomorrow. Write down three appropriate questions that you might ask them. Please be sensitive and respectful. Many of these people have experienced a lot of difficult situations. What would be considered an inappropriate question that you should not ask them tomorrow?

Rebuttal Paragraph (6-8 sentences) Acknowledge the opposition Provide one valid grounds and warrant to support the opposing point of view Defend yourself against the opposition Re-state claim

Acknowledge the opposition Some may say… It is true that… Despite all of these reasons… Some may disagree and say… There are some reasons why one might say… There is an argument to be made that…

Acknowledge the opposition EXAMPLE Some may say that the narrator was not hearing his conscience at the end of the story, but rather, the sound of his own physical heartbeat.

Provide one grounds/warrant to support opposition In other words, include one piece of evidence and explain how it supports the opposing point of view Introduce quote, imbed it into the sentence, cite the source, and explain the quote (just like in the body paragraph).

Grounds/Warrant for opposition EXAMPLE When he hears the sound at the end of the story, he is in much distress because the police officers are still there and he does not want them to hear. The longer it beats, the more active and restless and becomes. The narrator “talked more quickly,” “arose and argued,” “paced the floor,” “foamed,” “raved,” “swore,” “swung the chair,” and with each passing movement and action, “it grew louder” (Poe 10). Since heartbeats increase in speed and frequency when we are active or nervous, the narrator’s heartbeat would naturally be louder than usual in a situation as stressful as this.

Defend against opposition However…

Defend against opposition EXAMPLE However, even if he was literally hearing his own heartbeat, it could still represent his conscience since the sound of the heartbeat acted like a conscience, pushing him to do the right thing, confess to the murder.

Re-state claim Therefore…

Re-state claim EXAMPLE Therefore, it is clear that the sound of the heartbeat at the end of the story is meant to represent the narrator’s conscience.

Example Rebuttal Paragraph Some may say that the narrator was not hearing his conscience at the end of the story, but rather, the sound of his own physical heartbeat. However, even if he was literally hearing his own heartbeat, it could still represent his conscience since the sound of the heartbeat acted like a conscience, pushing him to do the right thing, confess to the murder. Therefore, it is clear that the sound of the heartbeat at the end of the story is meant to represent the narrator’s conscience.
