The Diary of Anne Frank Bell Ringer Instructions: Write the number of each bell ringer as well as the date. Underneath, write the prompt projected on the screen. On the next line, write your response. Skip lines between bell ringers.

DAF Bell Ringer #1 Write a paragraph recalling everything you remember about studying WWII, Nazi Germany, and/or the Holocaust. It could be specific people or events, details that stood out to you, or emotions you felt as you studied the time period.

DAF Bell Ringer #2 Do you feel that the United States had a responsibility to help the Jews during World War II? Does the U.S. still have a responsibility today to help other countries, people, etc.? Explain your thoughts.

DAF Bell Ringer #3 Which piece of propaganda from today’s class stood out to you as the most atrocious? Why do you feel that way? Do your personal experiences have any determination in the way you think about discrimination?

“Terrible Things” by Eve Bunting After reading “Terrible Things” and discussing propaganda, you are to create a cover for this children’s story. You will need to include the following on your illustration: story’s title, author’s name, illustrator’s name, shadow, rabbit, squirrel, porcupine, and frog. *Remember that your cover should be geared towards children (K-3 rd grade). You should show effort and neatness in your work.

DAF Bell Ringer #4 Copy and define the 22 vocabulary words starting on p. 734.

DAF Bell Ringer #5 Mr. Frank tells everyone the rules of their confinement--the steps they must take to achieve their goal, which is to remain undiscovered. What are these rules? Which rule would've been the most difficult for you to follow? Why?

DAF Bell Ringer #6 From what you see and hear in the first scenes, how would you characterize Anne? Use at least one quote from the play to support your answer.

DAF Bell Ringer #7 Suppose you were a German who was opposed to Hitler and the genocide of the Jewish people. Would you have risked your life to protect innocent Jews? Why or why not?

DAF Bell Ringer #8 Describe Anne's relationship with her mother. Use at least two direct quotes from the play to support your answer. Provide the page number on which you found the quotes.

DAF Bell Ringer #9 Describe Anne's relationship with her mother. Use at least two direct quotes from the play to support your answer. Provide the page number on which you found the quotes.

DAF Bell Ringer #10 Describe Anne's relationship with Peter in Act II. Use at least two direct quotes from the play to support your answer. Provide the page number on which you found the quotes.

DAF Bell Ringer #11 At the end of the play, Mr. Frank feels shamed by the part of Anne’s diary that reads, “I still believe that people really are good at heart.” What does this comment suggest about his OWN belief in people’s goodness? Do you think his belief changed over the three years since the family went into hiding? Explain in a paragraph.
