Non-Mendelian Genetics.  Some traits don’t follow the simple dominant/recessive rules that Mendel first applied to genetics.  Traits can be controlled.
Determining Sex Females are XX, producing only X gametes. Males are XY, producing both X & Y gametes.

Sex-Linked Inheritance.
Human Inheritance. Single Gene Traits Many Human traits are controlled by a single gene with one dominant and one recessive allele This yields two distinct.
Two copies of each autosomal gene affect phenotype.
Pedigrees Pedigrees study how a trait is passed from one generation to the next. Infers genotypes of family members Disorders can be carried on… – Autosomes.

Mendel studied autosomal gene traits The “either-or” traits that were seen in your tutorial. Genes found on autosomes (1-22 for humans) = autosomal.

Genetics – the study of how characteristics or traits are passed from parents to offspring. Geneticists tend to use capital and lower-case letters to name.
Punnett Squares 7 & 8. #7- Human Eye color Blue eyes is recessive to brown eyes. Use the letter B. Show the expected children (genotypes and phenotypes)
How is our sex determined?. Pre-assessment Questions What are the sex chromosomes? What does it mean when a trait is sex- linked? What are some examples.

SEX LINKED TRAITS. Why aren’t women bald? A man and a woman have a child together. Even though the man has a full head of hair at the age of 70, his son.
Sex Determination In humans, the X and Y chromosomes control the sex of offspring. Outcome is always 50% chance of a male, and 50% chance of a female Female.

Sex Linked Genes By: Jill Ziehm and Sierra Barker

Problem Question Sally is married to Joe who has a normal XY genotype. Sally’s sister is a carrier of muscular dystrophy and her two brothers do not have it. Which of her parents has muscular dystrophy? What is Sally’s genotype? What will the possible genotypes of Sally and Joe’s children be?

Steps to Solve Step 1: Create a pedigree chart to organize the information to find out what you don’t know

Step 2 Use punnett squares to solve for unknown alleles

Step 2 Grandparents Combine the letters in the square to create the genotypes After solving Sally’s parents genotype now you have found Sally’s genotype XX m XY X XmXm Y

Step 3 Parents By combining the information found in the last step to find Sally’s genotype you can now combine her genotype with Joe’s XX m XX XmYXmYXY XmXm X X Y

Step 4 Sally and Joe’s Kids The genotypes consist of 25% XX, 25% XY, 25% X m Y, and 25% XX m XX m XX XmYXmYXY XmXm X X Y
