Values

Influences on Personal Health Main influences on health include social and economic environment, physical environment, and the person’s individual characteristics and behaviors. Income and social status Social support networks Education and literacy Employment/working conditions Social environments Physical environments Personal health practices and coping skills Health child development

◦Biology and genetics ◦Health care services ◦Gender ◦Culture ◦What are the positive and negative influences on health?

Behavioral Choices ◦Culture-set of shared beliefs and attitudes by a group of people.  The people we surround ourselves with and how we react to that affects the choices we make. ◦Family-the ideas and values your family raised you with will influence the choices you make.

Behavioral Choices ◦Values-ideas or objects that are important to someone.  What do you value and how does that affect the decisions you make?

Values “You can’t do what you say if you don’t know what you believe. And you can’t do what you say if you don’t believe what you’re saying.” -Kouzes and Posner

What does it mean? Do you agree/disagree? Why? Do you have an experience or example that supports your position?

Values Values are “enduring beliefs about how things should be accomplished”. They are the “moral compass” of how we live our daily lives.

Where do values come from? What shapes/determines our values? How/why might values change over time? Are there times when we value something but our actions do not necessarily show it? Explain. ◦When do you think this happens?

Did anyone add any values to the list? What? How easy/difficult was it to rank your values? Are there any values in your own leadership experience that you feel your values are more apparent than in others? Explain.
