Ch 10 Nervous System

Terms  Brain- encephal/o- coordinates all activities of the body and receives and transmits messages throughout the body.  Spinal Cord- myel/o- transmits nerve impulses between the brain, limbs and lower part of the body  Nerves- neur/i, neur/o- receive and transmit messages to and from all parts of the body

More Terms  Central Nervous System (CNS)- includes the brain and spinal cord  Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)- includes the 12 pairs of cranial nerves extending from the brain and the 31 pairs of spinal nerves extending the spinal cord  Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)- includes the peripheral nerves and ganglia on either side of the spinal cord

Ch 10 Terms  ambul/o walk  concuss/o shaken together, violently agitated  contus/o bruise  ech/o sound  encephal/o brain  klept to steal  mening/o membranes, meniges  myel/o spinal cord, bone marrow  narc/o numbness, stupor  -esthesia sensation, feeling

Words  Noctambulism> is the condition of walking without awakening AKA: sleepwalking  Concussion> a violent shaking up or jarring of the brain  Contusion> an injury that does not break the skin and is characterized by swelling, discoloration, and pain  Echoencephalography> the use of ultrasound imaging to diagnose a shift in the midline structures of the brain  Encephalitis> inflammation of the brain  Kleptomania> a personality disorder characterized by a recurrent failure to resist impulses to steal objects not for immediate use of their monetary value  Meningitis> an inflammation of the meninges of the brain  Myelitis> inflammation of the spinal cord: also inflammation of bone marrow  Narcolepsy> a syndrome characterized by recurrent uncontrollable seizures of drowsiness and sleep  Anesthesia, general> the total loss of body sensation and consciousness as induced by various anesthetic agents (atracurium) given primarily by inhalation or intravenous injection
